Susan obtained her degree at Leicester University in 1981. After completing the Law Society finals at Guildford College of Law, she was articled with Harrisons solicitors in Leeds, qualifying in 1984.
Susan then went to Booth & Co solicitors in Leeds until she left, at the end of 1985, to have her first child. 9 years and a further two children later, Susan returned to private practice in 1994 with Simpson Millar, for whom she worked until May 2003.
She then left to join Walker Morris in Leeds where she worked in their private client department, particularly advising high net worth clients on their options for inheritance tax planning.
Susan joined Lee & Priestley in April 2006. She is a partner and Head of Department. She specialises in the drawing up of Wills, the setting up of trusts and the administration of estates for high net worth clients. Particular emphasis is placed on advising clients on how to reduce their potential Inheritance Tax liability, especially to business owners.
Lifetime settlements or trusts, using arrangements to suit the client's individual needs, offer the potential to further remove assets from assessment to Inheritance tax or control the family wealth for future generations.
Susan is keen to stress to clients that they should only carry out such tax planning as they are comfortable with, and part of her responsibility is not only to advise clients and what they can to reduce Inheritance tax, but also to look at their individual circumstances to assess the impact that this tax would have without such provisions, to give her clients the opportunity to make informed choices.
Susan's personal interests include playing golf (or at least trying to!) having been a member of Scarcroft Golf Club for over 18 years. She enjoys reading and also volunteers for a local charity raising literacy levels in local schools.
