Tax Relief on Development
15/Dec/2007

On 14 December 2007, HM Treasury published its proposals for reform of tax incentives for the redevelopment of brownfield land.

The proposals include:

• Extending the existing land remediation tax relief to include the cost of developing long-term derelict land and the cost of removing Japanese knotweed.

• Phasing out the landfill tax exemption for contaminated waste.

This extension of the relief to long-term derelict land should encourage brownfield redevelopers to bring this land back into use, particularly to meet housing need. The Government wants three million new homes built by 2020, with over 60% of these built on brownfield land.

The Government is expected to make a further announcement on its tax relief proposals in the 2008 Budget. This could be good news for developers especially those looking to re-develop land in urban areas
