Case Study
Registering Trade Marks
02/Nov/2004
Lee & Priestley's Intellectual Property Unit have extensive experience of registering trade marks. A recent request from a client to register a name and logo resulted in Lee & Priestley recommending using the UK Trade Mark Registry's provisional report service, whereby a view from the Trade Mark Registry is obtained (prior to making a formal registration application) as to whether they will object to the registration of the mark.
The report, which Lee & Priestley obtained within 7 days, showed that another company had already registered the logo (but not the name). Lee & Priestley then recommended to the client that a full application be made to register the name only. Had an application included the proposed logo, the application would have been refused and the client's money wasted. The client's name is now a protected trade mark.
